small business site redesign
UI design & project management
UI design & project management
T-Shirts, Etc. is a family owned and operated small business creating custom t-shirts in Houston, TX. They have a loyal customer base and a large following in their community.
For this website redesign project, we worked with our stakeholder to figure out his needs for the site, how his customers were using it, and help him address usability & accessibility issues.

PROJECT ROLE
UX + UI Designer
I collaborated on this freelance project with a couple of people from my UX bootcamp. We chose to redesign a small business website, targeting the information architecture, overall usability, and UI design.
User research insights were gained from surveys, user interviews, recorded usability tests, A|B testing, heuristic evaluation, and an accessibility audit.
As this is a small business they didn't have the budget or resources for a full redesign. We still went through the full UX Design process to be thorough. While we did do a full redesign of the site, we also worked on a list of small changes they could make over time to get them to a full redesign. We focused on accessibility issues first as those were the most urgent.
We started with a redline analysis of the existing site and used a heuristic evaluation to guide us. From there I used this color contrast checker to analyze the site's color scheme. I found several issues with the color palette, none of the existing layouts passed AA contrast guidelines.
From there we did an evaluation of the site usability, information architecture, and navigation. We built out the usability testing tasks for our user research from our findings.
We conducted one-on-one user interviews to gather insights. We incorporated usability testing to understand the pain points of the current website. User testing consisted of three tasks, of which only one failed.
I started on a quick-win redesign first. I addressed the elements that needed to be fixed in order to bring them into AA compliance. This set of mockups handled the color contrast accessibility issues only.
I changed several things for readability and the site would now pass AA requirements.

I then worked on the low fidelity mockups of the larger redesign. I focused on simplifying the visual design and navigation.
I reorganized the gallery page to make it easier to find products and their descriptions.

We presented our findings to the stakeholder and he was very happy with our progress on both the quick-win redesign and where we were headed in the low fidelity stage of the full redesign. He was not aware that his current site did not pass accessibility contrast recommendations, so I shared all of my documentation and recommendations for what needed to be updated in order to pass.
We did another round of usability testing on the new designs and the users passed 100%. After a successful user test we finalized the higher fidelity UI design.

This was a quick and fun project. Our stakeholder was open to our complete creative freedom and the quick updates he could make to make sure his site was better accessible.
